Blog For a Living: Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? & How to Make Your Blog the Place-to-Be
Blog for a living – It’s the Tuesday before finals and my newsfeed is blowing up with pictures of my friends out partying and drinking. (Which reminds me of some chick-lit I recently skimmed while on a coffee run in Barnes and Noble, Mindy Kaling’s “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?”)
It makes me wonder if my friends’ social calendars are really as jam-packed as they appear to be.
Because while they may not be studying for finals, they’re actually genius: my friends are utilizing social media to position themselves at the top of the social pyramid and to strengthen their personal brands.
Blog For a Living: How to Make Your Blog An It Girl
That’s right: in terms of online marketing they’re practically branding themselves. They know that the more they post pictures of themselves with a caption about “dominating in beer pong,” the more they position themselves in our consciousness as awesome beer pong players. The pretty, popular, life-of-the-party girl whose pictures always prominently feature the most attractive members of our baseball team getting touchy-feely with her, is building up her reputation as the Queen Bee. In real life, the true pack leader could be just out of frame.
From the vantage point of her twitter followers, it would appear the girl with the most facebook photos is top dog at whatever party she chooses to attend.
The same goes for online marketing. The blog that has the best rank, the most posts and the flashiest design isn’t always the best. It’s just the smartest. Regardless of whether its content is la creme de la cremeor not, the blog generating the most buzz will be successful because it knows how to be seen.

Blog For a Living: 3 Tips to the A-List
Here are my top three tips to help you blog for a living:
1. Party often: update consistently with posts that help strengthen your image. If you can, write at least one new blog post every day that adds to your reputation and strengthens your brand as “THE (fill in the blank) blog.”
2. Pics or it didn’t happen: To optimize your blog so Google’s SEO crawlers can find it, always post a picture and make sure its name relates to the key words from your post.
3. Never go out without a wingman: Get social proof from all your friends; have them “like,” comment, and reblog your content as often as possible. (If you’re posting about a product you’re trying to sell, make sure you include testimonials!)
